Work Description
The trowel trades are a family of crafts that have in common their most basic tool – the trowel. Examples of the work performed by masonry craftworkers are all around you. Tile in your bathroom, brick in homes and schools, the stone used to build many churches, the concrete sidewalks you use everyday, plastering, terrazzo, marble work, and the restoring of older buildings and monuments are all performed by the trowel craftworkers.
Working Conditions
Work in the trowel trades crafts is a combination of both physical and mental activity. Work is performed both indoors and out, and sometimes at great heights. Manual dexterity is important and work can also be physically demanding, requiring stooping, lifting, and standing for long periods of time.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- 18 years old or high school graduate at age 17
- Physically capable of performing the Trade
- Recommended high school courses: basic math, general science, drafting, blueprint reading, shop courses.
Application Process
- Apply to Joint Apprenticeship Committee
- Submit high school transcript or GED
- Interview with Joint Apprenticeship Committee
- Take a letter of introduction to prospective employers for an interview
Terms of Apprenticeship
- 3 years/ 4,680 hours of on –the-job training
- 400 hours of related classroom instruction (paid)
- 120 hours of night school on own time to include a first aid course
- First 6 months are a probationary period
- Wage scale systematically increases throughout the apprenticeship
