ELECTRICIANS
Work Description
The apprenticeship program provides individuals with real life on-the-job training combined with classroom instruction. Apprentices work together with highly skilled Journeyman while employed in the program.
Electricians work in a multitude of settings such as residential homes and apartment complexes, commercial office buildings and small complexes, retail stores and strip malls, hospitals, pulp and paper plants, power houses, and manufacturing plants.
Examples of the type of work include: Electrical Power and Lighting Systems, Power Distribution and Metering Systems, Fire Alarm Systems, Motor Control and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s), Building Automation Systems, Energy Management Systems, Packaging Systems, Manufacturing Systems, Backup Power Generation Systems, etc.
Working Conditions
Working environments can vary greatly depending upon the job assignment. Often Electricians perform work at various heights using ladders and/or power mechanical lifts. At times, you may be working inside doing highly technical work. Other times, you may be working outside installing conduit and wires in trenches or working on exterior building equipment.
Qualifications
- Applicants must apply in person at the time and place as directed by each Committee.
- Must be eighteen (18) years of age before the Time of Assignment (Proof of Age required)
- Must be a High School Graduate or have attained a GED.
- Must have completed one full year of high school Algebra or one post high school Algebra course with a passing grade (geometry and trigonometry recommended)
- Other recommended H.S. courses: mechanical drawing, blueprint reading, physics and English
- Applicants will be required to complete an Aptitude Test as authorized by each Committee.
Application Process
- Submit high school transcript or GED and proof of age
- Pass an aptitude test (testing schedule varies by location)
- Interview with Joint Apprenticeship Committee
- Apprentices are selected by employers from a list ranked according to test/interview scores
Terms of Apprenticeship
- 5 year program (8,000 hours on-the-job training)
- 720-800 hours of related day school
- Attend up to 200 hours of required evening instruction. (URI: Unpaid Related Instruction)
- Probationary period varies from 1000 hours (6 months) to 2000 hours (12 months) by area
- The Apprenticeship program is divided into six (6) pay periods. The wage at each level is a designated percentage of the Journeyman’s base wage rate for each area.
