GLAZIERS
Work Description
Glaziers install all types of glass products and architectural metals. Examples of products: plate and sheet glass, insulating units, spandrels, plastics, mirrors, shower doors and tub enclosures, aluminum entrances and doors, windows, storefronts, hardware application, curtain-walls and slope-walls.
Glaziers use a variety of hand and power tools and also must be knowledgeable of anchoring systems and caulking techniques.
Working Conditions
Glaziers work indoors and outdoors in all kinds of weather. They may work on ladders, swing stage, lifts, and scaffolding on high buildings. Glaziers must practice extreme care in working with glass.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- 18 years old or high school graduate at age 17
- Possess a valid driver’s license
- Physically capable of performing the trade
- No fear of heights
- Application Process
- Apply to Joint Apprenticeship Committee (apply year round)
- Submit high school transcript or GED
- Employers tend to select candidates for apprenticeship from workers already employed in their shop
- Applicants contact employer directly
Terms of Apprenticeship
- 4 year program
- 5,840 hours on-the-job training
- 400 of hours related classroom instruction (paid)
- One year probationary period
- Wage scale systematically increases throughout the apprenticeship
